While vaccination is a preventative measure to reduce the risks of COVID-19, side effects of vaccination are fairly common. The most common side effects that co-exist with vaccines that we have approved are fever, prickly pain at the injection site, body pain, and tiredness. However, some people experience unusual reactions, such as fainting and blackouts. You may experience some side effects, which are normal indications that your body is constructing defenses. These side effects may impair your ability to perform daily tasks, but they should subside within a few days. Some people experience no side effects. Fainting and dizziness are uncommon but troubling side effects. Experts have yet to discover a direct link between any of the vaccines causing these symptoms. Instead, researchers have discovered that post-vaccination pain or anxiety-related events can cause fainting. Most cases of post-vaccination fainting have been linked to vaccination-related anxiety. As strange as it may seem, anxiety-related reactions, also known as “immunization anxiety” or “stress response,” can cause a person’s heart rate to drop and cause them to faint. Some people may faint in anticipation of receiving the vaccine, become lightheaded, or develop sweaty, clammy skin. Light-headedness and loss of consciousness, as well as fainting, can be caused by a nervous reflex known as the chest pain reaction, which can sometimes lower blood pressure and heart rate, causing you to faint for a short period of time. For most people, the onset of common vaccine side effects begins a few hours after the vaccination and lasts for up to 3-4 days before resolving on its own. However, most incidental reports of fainting or a sudden drop in blood pressure levels, resulting in loss of consciousness, occur within the first thirty minutes or so after the injection. Teenagers, those suffering from acute deficiencies, and those experiencing stress or anxiety may be more susceptible to these side effects. According to a previous CDC report, 20% of those who fainted after receiving the vaccine had a prior history of fainting post-vaccination or had an adverse reaction to the vaccine.
